The most basic form of poker involves two players using a deck of cards to compete. Players must bet or fold depending on their position. However, some variants award the pot to the lowest hand.

In this variant, a player is able to select the pocket pairs he or she would like to see. Alternatively, the player can discard up to three of his or her cards. Similarly, a player with no chips may go “all in”.
Two-card draw is another common variant. A player is dealt a single hand at a time. Unlike stud, in draw, a player must place an ante (or blind) into the pot before the cards are drawn. Once the player’s hand is revealed, he or she can either make another ante bet or a fold.
The most important feature of poker is the bluffing. Most of the time, the poker player’s best bet is to force the other player to call his or her bet. By taking this approach, the poker player can stoke the pot by matching the other player’s bet and possibly taking down the competition.
Another impressive feat is calculating the right set of cards to show off to your fellow players. Several poker software packages have systems for this task. One common system uses color coding. For instance, red and black cards are considered low-valued, while purple and green are high-valued. The trick is deciding which system is appropriate for your particular situation.
While a range is no doubt a nice-to-have, the best way to estimate the number of hands you will be dealing with is to calculate the number of hands you have actually played. Depending on the rules and the opponent, this number can be as small as one or as large as several hundred. To determine the appropriate number, it’s best to consult a poker strategy book, ask a poker pro or do a little research on your own.
